Update April 10, 2002
David and Alison Swan (Founders of Concerned Citizens) and Tom Leonard (Executive Director of West Michigan Environmental Action Council), had a meeting with DNR officials Rodney Stokes (Chief of Parks and Recreation Bureau), Vicki Anthes (Director of Planning), and Paul Yauk (Acquisitions and Trails, Parks and Recreation Bureau) in Lansing on Monday, March 18, 2002.

Alison noted that popular support for keeping the water treatment plant proposals out of the park is serving Concerned Citizens well. "Clearly, our letter-writing phone-call campaign has had a big impact. And clearly, we gave them info they didn't have. We learned some useful things too." She cautions the overall climate in Lansing tends to favor proposals such as the land swap but observed that the DNR officials "are willing to work with us in any way they can".

Keep writing letters and contacting officials. Let them know that there are many people concerned about the welfare of Saugatuck Dunes State Park. It makes a difference! You can find addresses and phone numbers on our Government Contact Info page. Also, we have a sample letter on our Resources & Reference page.

Other news is our spring meeting, April 29th, at 6:30 pm, at the Saugatuck High School on Elizabeth, between Francis and Main. We have some important victories to celebrate, and will take a look at the work that lies ahead.
Also, our upcoming Dune Walk, in affiliation with The Lake Michigan Federation. Check out our Calendar page for details.
