May 2003 Newsletter

West Michigan Environmental Action Council's May 2003 edition of their newsletter Action Issue is dedicated to Michigan's threatened coastal sand dunes. This is a must read item for anyone concerned with dune preservation and it can be downloaded from their website at www.wmeac.org.

This month's edition kicks off with an excellent review of Michigan's Sand Dune Management and Protection Act of 1976 and WMEAC's pivotal role in its creation and that of the Critical Dune Amendments of 1988 which added increased protection for the rarest of these coastal treasures. The balance of the article serves as an introduction to the rest of the newsletter, describing the ongoing efforts of a number of organizations seeking to secure the dunes in their natural state for future generations.

Page six has an editorial by David and Alison Swan relating Concerned Citizens struggle in defense of Saugatuck Dunes State Park, our efforts to defeat the water treatment plant proposals and the need to remain vigilant.

Also included in this issue is coverage of WMEAC's suggestions to Governor Granholm’s Michigan Land Use Leadership Council at their May public hearings in Grand Rapids, an informative piece on efforts to purchase the Denison property, adjacent to the park's South boundary, for addition to Michigan's public lands, and so much more.

WMEAC has been a friend of the dunes for many decades and their indispensable assistance to Concerned Citizens for Saugatuck Dunes State Park cannot be overstated. Be sure to visit their website. You can also download the newsletter right here in .pdf format, 214KB. It requires Adobe Acrobat Reader®.
